The Bluegrass Open Mic in Shanghai is the key event for the bluegrass and old time scene in China, serving as a beacon for musicians to find the core community and help learners from around the country network and grow. Shanghai has a strong history of musical exchange going back to the Jazz Age and the beginnings of Chinese pop music, and was even the port that saw the first banjo come to China in 1892 from Tennessee.

While it is an open mic, we maintain a fairly strict Bluegrass and Old Time only policy before 11:00 pm, to ensure education and promotion about the styles. After 11:00 pm we end the official portion of the evening and open it up for the Afterparty, when anyone can come up and sing or jam whatever they want. Whoo!
